What Programs Do You Need as A Freight Broker? Under $300/month Budget

Load boards, CRM’s, Emails, IP phones…

Technology for freight broker’s has come a long way.  With so many tools to use to optimize your business it’s hard to choose what you need vs what you can manage to do without.

Whether you are at the beginning of your brokerage journey, or just looking to run a lean technology stack, in this video I am going to cover what I would do with a technology budget of less than $300 per month.

In general your “essentials” that you need to run your brokerage fall into 4 categories.

Order management

Communication

Carrier Acquisition

Financial

So the only programs that I would consider “must-have’s” for your brokerage all fall into those categories.

Starting from most important to least important, I recommend the following:

  1. TMS system

The TMS system is the heart and core of your business.  You use it to organize your customers, loads, and carriers so that nothing gets left behind.  For this I recommend

  1. Load Board

Now that you have your orders organized, you need to find some carriers.  For the last 24 years we as a company have relied on DAT for a reliable load board that helps us get our loads covered with quality carriers.

  1. Email and Phone

Now you need a way to contact all your customers and carriers that is professional and easy to use.

My go to applications for this are Microsoft Office 365 and Dialpad as an online phone solution.  Both affordable, professional, and easy to use.

  1. Accounting

All TMS systems do not have a way to accurately track your spending outside of freight costs.  I recommend the software Xero to meet this need.  It’s easy, intuitive, and affordable.

Bonus CRM:

A CRM is a customer relationship management system and they are useful to track a large volume of calls/emails to potential clients.  There are many options on the market for free, but if you would like to invest in a more professional option.  I recommend

Pipedrive CRM

All of these recommendations are based on my experience, how easy they are to learn and the value you get for the investment.

P.S. Whenever you’re ready… here are 4 ways I can help you grow your freight brokerage:
